Conor King, a photographic artist, approached the creation of Conversion with an interest in the aura that gold, a precious metal, maintains as well as the mineral’s light reflecting qualities. Black and white photographic negatives, made of light sensitive silver halide crystals suspended in gelatin, record light from the camera lens. Interested in the idea that the light reflected by gold would be recorded in silver, King photographed a small bar of gold lit by natural sunlight. This film was then processed so that only the sliver exposed to light would remain. He then employed a scanning electron microscope to magnify the film, creating an image of the physical record of reflected gold light on silver halide crystals.
