blot

June 28-july 6, 2019

doublespace, 144 W 12th Ave, Denver, CO 80204

Hey Hue, in collaboration with DoubleSpace, presents “Blot,” a duo exhibition featuring Drew Austin and Angela Craven. The word “blot” is both an action and a noun. It has both negative and positive connotations. It’s shifty, amorphous, a trickster. “Blot” pairs Austin’s loose, mixed media abstractions with Craven’s Rorschach-inspired resin/mixed media on wood pieces. This exhibition explores conceptions of fluidity, the organic movement of liquid material across a plane, while highlighting humanity’s need to identify and interpret—our desire to assign meaning and/or a story—to the abstract, the ambiguous, the unknowable, the urge to say “this is that” and tie it up neat and tidy.

Drew Austin is an interdisciplinary Denver-based artist exploring connections between the natural world and the art world. He relies heavily on abstraction and plays with surface, material, and conceptual ambiguity. He curates exhibitions for Re:Creative Denver. Drew earned a BFA from Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design.

Angela Craven is an abstract painter based in Denver. Her work aims to mirror the complexity of the everyday especially as it relates to interaction and communication. She earned her BFA from Colorado State University and works out of GRACe studios in RiNo.

DoubleSpace is an artist-run gallery within a gallery in Denver’s Golden Triangle Art District. Created by potter/sculptor Steven James Jackson Meyers and artist/designer Keenan Mehrens, DoubleSpace also serves as a studio and creative workspace. Their 2019 pop-up series will feature Megan Phillips, Emma Benschop, George P. Perez, Duncan Parks, Dylan S. Griffith, Verna Benschop, Chelsea Gilmore, Andrea Dolter, Matt Kuck, and Keenan Mehrens.
